Peanut the Squirrel has been taken because New York state laws prohibit keeping wild animals as pets. Fans have expressed anger about the capture, claiming that Peanut was well-cared and had provided joy to people all over the world. Her owner is now facing the threat of never seeing Peanut again and has been struggling to get her back.

Peanut’s fans have started petitions and flooded social media with words of support, searching for her homecoming. Many people are hoping that Peanut’s popularity and public anger will convince officials to reconsider the situation and allow her to return home.

The New York Department of Environmental Conservation provided the following statement about the seizure:

DEC conducted an investigation after receiving multiple reports from the public about potentially unsafe housing of wildlife that could carry rabies and the illegal keeping of wildlife as pets.

Is it legal for squirrels to be kept as pets in NY?

The New York Department of Environmental Conservation states that it is illegal for young wildlife to be kept as pets.

“Inappropriate care given to young wildlife often results in abnormal attachment to humans,” the Department of Environmental Conservation states.

If a person finds a young wild animal that is injured or orphaned, the department advises contacting a wildlife rehabilitator, who are the only people legally allowed to receive and treat distressed wildlife. The goal of rehabilitators is to safely release healthy animals back into the wild.

Peanut’s Instagram account now has over 500,000 followers. The account contains footage of Peanut performing acts with Mr Longo, occasionally dressed in hats, usually climbing over him or hugging him, and eating waffles
